Grip Caps, General Information
Not being satisfied with the paucity of grip cap designs available on the market, I have developed a number of new designs which are divided into two main categories:
- Oval
Standard size for oval grip caps is 1.375 wide x 1.875 long. Mounting may be either two holes spaced 1.250" apart, one centrally located hole or without any holes for grip caps to be permanently affixed to the stock. - Teardrop
These grip caps are available in three sizes: Small ~ 1.875 long, Medium ~ 2.250 long, and Large ~ 2.625 long. Two mounting holes (when used) are spaced 1.250", 1.625" or 2.000" apart respectively.
Mounting screws are furnished (if necessary) for each grip cap. all screws are #5-40 x 5/8" long. Stainless screws will be provided with stainless grip caps. Single screw mounted grip caps will have two small recesses on the rear surface. These are used during installation to provide a means to accurately relocate the grip cap in the event it is removed. They may also be used to provide interchangeability. Use an "el cheapo' when hunting and put the fancy one on only for display purposes.
Each category has been further subdivided into several sub categories
- Solid
- Medallion (not shown)
- Skeleton
- Recessed (not shown)
- Insert style
Each sub category has been further divided into various edge styles and top surface designs. Edge treatments, shown in the section drawings, include cove, chamfered, scalloped and plain, with others to follow later.
Top surfaces of both grip caps and inserts may be domed or flat, plain or carved in bas-relief, recessed pocket or medallion style.
Medallion Style refers to items having an integral raised pad or a raised insert to give the appearance of a medallion attached to the top surface. These pads or inserts may have either flat or domed or bas relief surfaces.
Recessed Style refers to pockets machined into the top surface. These recessed may be formed either via machining of the grip cap itself or with the use of an insert machined slightly lower than the top of the grip cap. Inserts styles may contain bas releif carvings. machined recesses are suitable for inlay work.
Skeleton Style grip caps have areas machined all the way thru the grip cap to allow fitting so the background material shows thru.
Solid Style grip caps are plain with no pads, recesses or bas relief artwork.
Insert style grip caps are machined similar to skeleton style grip caps and may even be used as such. The cutouts are designed to allow machining matching inserts to be installed in the cutout portion without the fitting required for skeleton style grip caps. Inserts may be loose (for interchangeability) or permanently boned to the grip cap. For those desiring to include a "white line spacer" between the grip cap and the stock, these grip caps are available with the spacer permanently bonded to the grip cap.
All our grip caps are CNC machined from either solid stock or from standard or custom castings. Bar stock refers to both metal (Damascus steel, Mokeume Gane, etc, and stabilized wood or other materials not easily cast.
Some bas relief carvings are in the development stage. These items, when available will be cast and considered standard. Others, due to the nature of the material, cannot be cast and must be hand carved. Custom bas relief castings and carvings are available on special order. Please inquire.
The thousands of possible combinations available preclude the possibility of maintaining a stock for all items. Machining the parts using CNC technology allows for rapid filling of orders from an easily maintained supply of bar stock and castings. We are developing a small "in house" casting service. This will help reduce the time required to produce standard and custom non-ferrous castings
Materials for grip caps and inserts include but are not limited to:
- Aluminum
- Brass
- Cast plastic, machinable (ivory color standard, others optional)
- Micarta (any avaiable standard color)
- Nickel sliver
- Stainless steel
- 8620 alloy steel
- Copper
- Gold (PMC inserts)
- Silver (PMC inserts)
- Platinum (PMC Inserts)
- Bronze (PMC inserts)
- Walnut and other stabilized woods (visit the stabilized materials section)
All grip caps are unfinished unless ordered other wise. Machine tool marks may be seen in several photographs of steel and aluminum grip caps. The ridges left due to the maching process are only about .0002" high and are very easily polished away. For testing purposes, these samples were made from bar stock and oversized castings. Patterns are under cosntruction, for the purpose of casting the metal grip caps to eliminate machining time as well as the tool marks.
Custom Custom grip caps of your design are available on special order. Custom features inlude:
- CNC machined checkering
- Size, shape and materials
- bas relief carving or casting
- engraving
- inlays
- scrimshaw

We realize, we may have "overdone" it a bit with the many designs provided. In fact, all of the designs we have available are not posted at this time. Appeal. like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. Treating most designs as standards rather than custom reduces cost to the consumer and provides much greater flexibility in production.
Please visit the appropriate sections for more specific information. Most items are listed, but may not be fully documented. Fully documented items will have links to the specific item.. If you see something that sounds interesting but hasn't been fully documented, or if you have something in mind that isn't shown, please conctact us for further information. The "custom" item you might be looking for may already be one of our current standards.
The first cross section drawing shows the domed and flat topped medallion style grip caps. The second shows the domed and flat top recessed grip caps and the third shows double insert style grip caps. Solid style grip caps will be identical to the skeleton style but sans the cutouts. Also shown on the three drawings are the various edge treatments available. The phot shows a sample grip cap made for testing purposes. This item was made from cast plastic. The inserts were made from unstabilized walnut. This item is normally considered a skelteton grip cap. If, however one were to have both parts made from stabilized woods or other materials and bonded together, it becomes a one piece "solid" grip cap as indicated on one of the photos in the appropriate section. The last item shows a plan view of a teardrop spearpoint skeleton style grip cap with scalloped edges.
A number of photos have been provided of various samples in the brochure. The brochure is in pdf format. When downloading, your computer will attempt to open an Adobe program for downloading. It may take a few moments to download. Please be patient. Feel free to take a look and pass the info along to others.
