Farquharson Action, General information

The photos shown are of a reproduction Westley Richards Farquharson built from bar stock by me back in the early 1990's.   It is a direct copy of an original with all parts sized like the original.  It was used as the pattern for the castings used in the casting kits sold for several years by Action Castings, LLC.

I've redesigned the Farquharson action to reduce cost and labor.  The action itself will still work and function exactly the same way as the original Westley Richards Farquharson.  In the process, the overall number of parts has been slightly reduced. The new design will look very similar but slightly modified as described below.

Virtually all hand fitting has been eliminated and machine work reduced to a minimum.  Most springs have been replaced with commercially available components.   The only "flat" spring required will be the extractor spring.  In addition to reducing the labor required to build the action, the new action will have the following features and/or options:

Action style:  The new design allows for the action to be built as a rifle or pistol.

Barrels:  Barrels may be fixed or interchangeable.  Interchangeable barrels may be of the screw in type or use quick take down barrels similar to those used on the Dragon Slayertm.  While it is easy to install interchangeable barrels, one must bear in mind a different extractor must be installed if the case size on the extra barrels changes.  This will require the action to be disassembled as no method has been found (yet) to get around this little inconvenience.

While this description primarily covers the single barrel model, it can be built in double barrel version.  Double barrel pistol anyone?  While it is possible to install interchangeable barrels on the double barrel version, it is not recommended.

Cartridge size: The action would be built in magnum size only.  The overall size of the actio is only about 1/8" taller, about 1/8" longer front to rear and designed for an overall finished width of 1-1/2" for greater strength.  These changes allow for the use of virtually any size or style (including shotgun) the user might select.  Additionally, rimless cartridges or even muzzle loading barrels may be used.

Safety: The tang mounted has been replaced with an ambidextrous hammer/trigger blocking safety (mounted in front of the trigger guard bow) identical to that used on the Dragon Slayertm action.  This provides room on the top of the tang for installation of a folding tang mounted aperture sight if desired.

Mainspring: The mainspring has been replaced with a commerecially available coil type mainspring whicyh has been around for decades.  It has been made adjustable for ease of installation.

Extractor spring:  The extractor spring will most likely be furnished with the kit to eliminate the tedium (and skill ) required for hand building.

Hammer:  While the standard Farquharson uses a concealed hammer, a slight modification allows the use of exposed hammers for use in long range black powder events.

The new design is expected to be produced in several formats:

"As cast" kits are for those desiring the challenge of building the action from detailed instructions.  Pre-machined kits are for those lacking the necessary machine tools and or required skills.

A survey is to be conducted to determine possible demand for this action.  Cost for a completed rifle/pistol is expected to similar to that of a Ruger #1.  Kits would be somewhat less.  If you are interested in seeing this action produced at a REASONABLE cost, please pass this on to all your friends and aquaintences.  Check back soon to participate in our survey.  Remember, the greater the interest, the greater the chance of getting both of the actions into production.

Thanks for your interest.
