Wyvrn Actions:
General Information
Wyvrn(tm) Actions are new recently developed (August 2009) single and double barrel designs.
These are break open actions. They were specifically designed to provide an ultra strong action and use any of the millions of existing barrels used for the T/C.
Originally, this action was based on a substantial redesign of the 1897 Westley Richards Farquharson. New developments have eliminated most of the Westley Richards designs. To achieve this, the breech block and associated mechanisms were eliminated. The under lever, has been replaced with a new bottom lever that only moves about 12 degrees. The adjustable headspace feature used on The Dragon slayer was added. Springs are all commercial style coil springs. The rebounding hammer feature has been retained for added safety.
The action was also designed to be built from investment castings. However, as with the new developments for the Dragon Slayer actions, castings have been eliminated in favor of CNC machined components. Many of the savings obtained from design changes to the Dragon Slayer have been carried over to the Wyvrn actions. No molds to make. Only two fixtures are required for all action sizes.
The Wyvrn action has an integral trigger guard and does not use a falling block. It is machined in right and left hand halves from either 4140 carbon steel or stainless steel alloy which are then welded together. Consequently, there are only two parts to be machined using CNC technology. This leads to an action that is even easier to build and less costly than the Dragon Slayer. No waiting for demand to warrant manufacturing in stainless steel. The exposed hammer design allows for instant recocking in the event of a misfire and provides the added bonus of the option to use it in long range black powder shooting events.
For those who desire the look and feel of the Farquarson with its concealed hammer, a under lever version with the correct "look" will be available. The lever on this version rotates approximately 32 degrees instead of the nearly 70 degrees on the original. While not required, an optional lever latch may be installed to enhance the look. With care, it may be recocked in the event of a misfire without fully opening the action. The stocks for this action may be "drop in" style or rear mounted buttstock and front forend similar to the original.
Prototypes of the single barrel exposed hammer actions are under construction. Production of kits will follow as soon as possible. The designs are such that commercially available barrels, from T/C may be used without alteration to the barrels. The existing extractors are used as is. Other commercial and custom barrels, including muzzle loading black powder, may also be used.
Some time "down the road" when time permits, bot h of actions will be available in double barrel version.
This action uses the same ambidextrous safety used on the Dragon Slayer. In fact, the levers are interchangeable.
The stocks were origianlly designed similar to the Farquharson. This design has been replaced with the "drop in" style stocks. as they are much easier to build. The drop in stocks also provide for stronger stocks when the action is set up as a pistol. Stocks may be classic rifle, thumbhole or pistol style.
This action will be the easiest to build from a kit. The use of machined parts, integral trigger guards and lack of a falling block aong with it's associated mechanisms, eliminates virtually all hand fitting. Most of the build work (after welding) involves machining a number of holes in the correct location and manufacture of several parts using a lathe.
The double barrel version (when availble) will only require the additon of a few compents.
This action, like the Dragon Slayer, is capable of using rimfire, centerfire, rimmed or rimmless cartridges, shotgun barrels or black powder barrels. The same type of firning pin mechanism used on the Dragon Slayer is also used on this action.
Bas relief artwork is NOT available on any of these actions.
As with the Dragon Slayer, the lack of a need to maintain a large inventory means any action ordered may be machined in a short time if a kit is not in stock.
Actions will be available in both stainless and 4140 carbon steel alloys.
